Baseball made their first conference tournament appearance this past week in Burlington, North Carolina. The Trojans lost game one to Louisburg College and fell in day two to Catawba Valley Community College to be eliminated from the tournament.

The Trojans finished 27-30 overall on the season and 17-18 in conference play. Both overall and conference wins were the most in program history. Team six also broke the standard for putouts, assists, runs scored, hits, triples, homeruns, runs batted in and walks.

Jaylon Woodley (Courtland, VA) was a leading player for the Trojans in his sophomore season. He set new school records in hits, walks, assists, runs scored and stolen bases. He also led the team in doubles along with Zavion Ingram (Clayton, NC) who both had 12 on the season.

Caleb Holland (Fayetteville, NC) pitched the most innings for the Trojans this year throwing 62.1 innings, only walking 12 batters. He finished the year leading the team in ERA at 3.18 and led the Region 10 DII Baseball conference in ERA for most of the season. This earned Holland a spot on the NJCAA Region X All-Region First Team as a pitcher. He also helped the Trojans offensively as a two-way player. Holland had 41 hits, 7 doubles, 5 homeruns and 35 RBIs.

Drew Canody (Tampa, FL) was a big impact player for the first half of the year before he suffered a season-ending injury. Canody holds the school record for homeruns with seven and was hitting .456 on the year. Even with his injury, he earned NJCAA Region X All-Region First Team Outfield honors.

Brett Alvis (Hanover, VA) was another big arm for the Trojans this season. He threw 60.2 innings and led the Trojans with 60 strikeouts.

Benjamin Rohrbach (Stafford, VA), Tanner McNeal (Currituck County, NC), Robert Willis (Montgomery, AL) and Matthew Roberts (Canton, NC) all pitched 30 plus innings for the Trojans, becoming conference weekend starters this season.

Behind the plate, Braylan Bull (Cumming, GA) and Wilmer Cuevas (Brentwood, NY) split catching time. Bull finished leading the team with 168 putouts and Cuevas was right behind with 167.

Baseball loses 18 sophomores this year that were a huge impact in the teams success the past two seasons. The Trojans will return some big freshman players next season: Devin Outlaw (Orange Park, FL), Markey Purvis (Bennettsville, SC), Zamar Lewis (Dublin, NC), Jack Anderson (Saint Simmons Island, GA) and Braylan Bull. Along with some redshirt injury players.

The Trojans currently have six players moving on to play at the next level:

  • Tanner McNeal- Erskine College
  • Ben Rohrbach- University of the Cumberlands
  • Biz Ortiz- Methodist University
  • Drew Canody- George Mason University
