Course Substitutions
Are there any courses I’ve already taken that can be substituted for another in my Program of Study?
Credit for Prior Learning
Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) allows students to earn academic credit for college-level knowledge and skills gained outside of a traditional classroom. This can reduce the time and cost required to complete a degree, diploma, or certificate by applying what a student already knows toward program requirements.
Eligible learning experiences may include:
- Military service and training
- Fire and emergency services certifications
- Industry and corporate training programs
- Apprenticeships
- Standardized examinations
- Portfolio assessment of prior learning
Up to 75% of a degree, diploma, or certificate may be satisfied through CPL, depending on the program and type of credit awarded.
Portfolio credit allows students to document and demonstrate relevant prior learning for faculty evaluation when no standardized credit option applies.
Standardized Exam and Crosswalk Credit (Other Credit Options)
Students may also earn curriculum credit through the successful completion of approved standardized exams or established crosswalks. Eligible options include:
These options allow students to demonstrate prior learning and apply equivalent credit toward degree, diploma, or certificate requirements when aligned with curriculum standards.
Continuing Education to Curriculum Credit
Several FTCC Continuing Education (CE) courses qualify for transfer credit when applied to a related FTCC curriculum program. This pathway allows students to transition from non-credit training into credit-bearing programs without repeating equivalent coursework.

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) Appeal Process
Students may request a re-evaluation of transfer or prior learning credit by submitting a CPL Appeal Form. The process ensures all documentation is thoroughly reviewed for appropriate credit consideration.
Appeal Guidelines
- Students are responsible for submitting a request for re-evaluation of transfer credit.
- Submit one appeal form per course review.
- Allow up to 30 business days from the date your appeal is received for completion.
- You may be asked for additional documentation, such as certification or exam details, for further review.
- All correspondence, including final decisions, will be sent to your FTCC student email account.
Before submitting an appeal, students should first review any CPL credits already awarded using the following resources:
- Academic Advisor
- Self-Service account

About Waitlists
What if a class is already full?
If a class section is full, check to see if another section has available seats. If not, add your name to the waitlist in Self-Service. If a seat becomes available the next person on the Waitlist will be automatically registered for the section. You will be notified at your FTCC student email of your Waitlist registration.
The Waitlist option will be available for every section at the start of each registration period and closes on the last day of the registration period.
It is the student’s responsibility to pay for any course registration through the waitlist process by the posted payment deadline.
Get on a Waitlist:
- Login to Self-Service and click on Student Planning
- Select Go to Plan & Schedule, search the class you want
- If the section has a 0 for seats available that means there is a waitlist, select Add Section to Schedule
- Return to Plan & Schedule and press the Waitlist Button for that class.
Can a student be on multiple Waitlists?
Students can be on waitlists for different courses but cannot be on a waitlist for multiple sections of the same course.
Can a student remove themselves from a Waitlist?
Student’s must contact their academic advisor to be removed from a waitlist.
What if another section is added?
Students should check Self-Service regularly. Additional sections for courses may be added at any time during the registration period. Students can register for another section of a course, but they must remove their name from the Waitlist first.
Online Course Withdrawal
Once the refund period has passed, students who are unable to remain in a course for the current term can request to be withdrawn in Self-Service, as long as it is within the withdrawal period.
Review: Refund, Withdrawal & Incomplete Dates under current Semester’s Registration button, to see withdrawal dates for the current semester.
- Withdrawn courses will appear on your transcript with a grade of “W,” which is not factored into your academic GPA.
- If you are receiving Financial Aid or VA Benefits, the college advises contacting the appropriate office prior to withdrawing from class to avoid any potential financial or academic penalties.
Submit A Course Withdrawal:
- Login to Self-Service
- Under Academics: Select Student Course Withdrawal
- Complete the form
- Agree to the terms and click Submit
You will receive email confirmation from the Registrar’s office when your withdrawal request has been processed. Generally, 24-48 business hours after submission.
Contact your instructor if you have any questions about withdrawing from class.
Transcript Evaluation
Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC) evaluates transcripts from other regionally accredited institutions to determine transfer credit eligibility. Transfer credit is awarded for college-level coursework that aligns with FTCC’s curriculum standards and institutional policies.
Transcript Submission Requirements
To ensure accurate evaluation of transfer credits, students must follow FTCC’s transcript submission requirements outlined below:
- Students must request official transcripts be sent directly to FTCC from all previously attended regionally accredited colleges or universities.
- Transcripts must be received in a sealed envelope or sent electronically through a secure, recognized service.
- Unofficial or student-issued copies cannot be used for transfer credit evaluation.
Evaluation Process
Once all official transcripts have been received and processed, FTCC carefully reviews each student’s previous coursework to determine transfer eligibility based on college policies and academic standards:
- Transcript evaluations are completed after the student’s application for admission is processed and all official transcripts have been received.
- Evaluations are based on the most current course equivalency standards published in the FTCC College Catalog.
- Credit may only be awarded for courses completed with a grade of “C” or higher (or the institutional equivalent) from regionally accredited institutions.
- Developmental, technical, or non-transferable courses may not be accepted depending on program requirements.
Re-Evaluation and Updates
After transfer credit evaluation is completed, students should be aware of the following important details and next steps regarding their academic record and program of study:
- If a student changes their program of study, a re-evaluation of prior coursework may be requested by contacting the Evaluation Office.
- Additional documentation, such as course descriptions or syllabi, may be required to determine course equivalency.
- Students will receive notification once transfer credits are posted to their academic record, viewable through Self-Service.
Appeal Process
If you have questions or concerns about a transfer credit decision, you may request a re-evaluation by submitting an electronic Transfer Credit Appeal Form.
Before submitting an appeal, please:
- Review your awarded transfer credits in Self-Service.
- Consult with your Academic Advisor or Admissions Counselor for clarification.
Appeal Timeline:
- Allow two (2) weeks for FTCC to process your appeal.
- You will be notified of the outcome within 30 business days via your FTCC student email account.
- Notifications may include a request for additional documentation or the final decision.
- Retain copies of all submitted materials for your records.
For course re-consideration complete and submit an electronic Transfer Credit Appeal form.

Military Credit Evaluation
Military service schools may be submitted for credit evaluation. Service members should submit an official electronic copy of their Joint Services Transcript (JST) through the Department of Defense JST website.
Military service experience is evaluated based on the American Council on Education (ACE) Guide credit recommendations.
Students must successfully complete at least one curriculum course at Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC) before college credit for military experience can be officially awarded.
⚠️ Important:
If you enroll in a course for which you may be eligible to receive military credit, you could be required to repay federal tuition assistance. To avoid this, please contact military@faytechcc.edu prior to registering, to confirm which college credits have been or can be awarded.
For additional ways to earn credit through Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) — including CLEP exams, industry certifications, or experiential learning — please review the Credit for Prior Learning tab located on the Registration & Records page of the FTCC website.
