About
Student Success & Engagement (SSE) is an artificial intelligence (AI) equity and student success solution that helps colleges and universities keep underserved students engaged, increase retention, and optimize the chances of degree and certificate completion. At FTCC, SSE is being used to
- Turn data from existing institutional systems into actionable insights
- Identify and engage students that need your support
- Use validated research to guide intervention strategies
SSE provides holistic information in one place to better aid in assisting students. SSE pulls data in from Colleague (Datatel) and Blackboard daily to ensure an accurate picture of student engagement and performance.

Automated Alerts
SSE can create automated alerts. The following automated alert is being used for Spring 2023 – “Low-Grade Alert”. This alert is sent automatically to any student whose course grade is a 70 or below. For this alert to be accurate, faculty must ensure they have the most current average (shown as a percentage) posted in the Blackboard gradebook.
Here’s how to ensure you have your Blackboard gradebook setup for the automated grade alert to work:
If using Blackboard original
The weighted overall grade (which must be reflected as a percentage) must be identified as the external grade column. To set the external grade, open a column’s menu and select Set as External Grade. The External grade icon appears in the column header you chose as a green check mark.
If using Blackboard Ultra
The overall grade column is already configured to import automatically. However, the column must be setup to display as a percentage. To edit this option, go to Gradebook à Gradebook Settings à Manage overall grade settings à Select how the overall grade is displayed à select percentage.
