Competitive Admissions

A student must complete all pre-requisites and gain competitive points in order to apply for approval to the Speech Language Pathology Assistant program.

Once approved for a Health program, students will be provided with information regarding books, uniforms, supplies, and equipment, and any additional program requirements.
Competitive Points
As part of the competitive admissions process, each student is evaluated based on a point system. The Competitive Points Worksheet outlines the additional 116 departmental points a prospective student can earn.

Advisee Manual
The advising manual provides a guide for student, faulty, and consumer understanding of the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Program philosophy, mission, policies, and procedures. FTCC pre-entry students are provided this manual for use prior to acceptance into the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Program.
SLPA Mission Statement
The Fayetteville Technical Community College Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed with a high-quality academic and clinical experience. Faculty and staff are committed to practices that develop professional and ethical speech-language pathology assistants that are well-equipped to meet the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse individuals with communication disorders, the profession of speech-language pathology, and the community at large. We strive to improve human communication by:
1) educating students on the principles and methods necessary to practice as an entry-level speech-language pathology assistant,
2) instructing students on effectively executing therapeutic and evidenced-based practices, under the direction of a licensed speech-language pathologist,
3) coaching students on evaluating professional standards and engaging in ethical practices,
4) engaging students in professional discourse (oral and written) to effectively communicate and collaborate with other professionals and the families they serve.
Aligned with the college’s mission to serve as a core learning centered organization with rich educational opportunities, the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Program offers an inclusive program of study designed with diverse academic and clinical learning experiences. To further the mission of the college to improve economic mobility in Cumberland County and the region, the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Program collaborates with stakeholders to ensure graduates enrich the FTCC service area by increasing therapeutic resources while providing ethical and evidence-based practices.

What to Expect:
Course Work
The Speech-Language Pathology Assistant curriculum prepares graduates to work under the supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist, who evaluates, diagnosis, and treats individuals with various communication disorders.
Courses provide instruction in methods of screening for speech, language, and hearing disorders and in following written protocols designed to remediate individual communication disorders. Supervised field experience includes working with patients of various ages and various disorders.
Career Paths
Graduates are eligible to take the NC Registration Exam for SLP-Assistants. Upon receiving a passing score, graduates are eligible for registration as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant with the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists. Registered SLP-Assistants may work under a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist and are employed in healthcare, private, and educational settings.

Prerequisite: High School Diploma/GED, 1 Unit of Biology, ENG-002 Tier 2, MAT-003 Tier 1, or Placement Test Equivalent

Program Length: 3 Semesters
Prerequisites: Participants must have or be a candidate for a bachelor’s degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited college or university. Award: Certificate
Fast Track Program
The Fayetteville Technical Community College Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Fast Track Program prepares the student to receive clearance to take the North Carolina Registration Exam for Speech-Language Pathology Assistants. Eligible students must provide evidence of successful completion of a bachelor’s degree (in Speech-Language Pathology) from an accredited institution (within the past 5 years) and they must complete the following courses or equivalent:
