Accreditation

The Central Sterile Processing Program (CSP) at Fayetteville Technical Community College follows the standards and recommended practices as outlined in the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI).
After successfully completing all didactic and clinical experience required for entry-level competency, Central Sterile Processing students are eligible to take the National Certification Exam offered through the Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).

Competitive Admissions

A student must complete all pre-requisites and gain competitive points in order to apply for approval to the Central Sterile Processing program.
Once approved for a Health program, students will be provided with information regarding books, uniforms, supplies and equipment, and any additional program requirements.

Information Sessions

Attendance at the information session is mandatory. Students who do not attend will automatically be removed from the list of prospective applicants, and will not be considered for the admissions process.

Competitive Points

As part of the competitive admissions process, each student is evaluated based on a point system. The Competitive Points Worksheet outlines the additional 15 departmental points a prospective student can earn.

     

What to Expect:

Course Work

The Central Sterile Processing curriculum is designed to prepare individuals for the field of Sterile Processing and Central Service Supply.
Students will develop skills necessary to properly disinfect, prepare, process, store, and distribute both sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment for patient care. Also, students will learn to operate various sterilization units and monitor effectiveness of the sterilization process.

 

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, the student should be able to:
  • Understand and follow decontamination procedures
  • Prepare and package supplies, instruments, and equipment for sterilization
  • Monitor the process of steam, Ethylene Oxide, dry heat, and liquid chemical sterilization
  • Maintain product sterility
  • Distribute storage, inspect, and control inventory of supplies, instruments, and equipment

Career Paths

Graduates will receive a certificate and may be eligible to apply to take the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution Personnel Examination (CBSPD). Employment opportunities include:
  • Central Processing Units in Hospitals
  • Dialysis Facilities
  • Surgery Centers
