Fayetteville Tech was one of 182 NJCAA softball programs to earn a team GPA of 3.0 or better last year.
The association unveiled its 2019-20 Academic Teams of the Year on Thursday, recognizing 1,026 teams across all sports that met the mark.
The Trojans combined for a team GPA of 3.15, surpassing a goal of 3.0 that coach Miguel Justiniano said the team set early in the year.
“We set that goal mainly because we want to make sure they graduate from FTCC,” Justiniano said. “There’s some speculation that they can get by with a 2.0 or a 2.5. We want them to strive for better standards.
“And if they do well with us, that means they’ll be able to continue that as they go to a four-year college, so this is giving them a head start.”
The 2020 softball program is the first FTCC athletics program to earn the NJCAA Academic Team of the Year distinction.
