FAYETTEVILLE, NC – March 18, 2019 – Two staffers from Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC) have been selected as Engaging Excellence in Equity Fellows by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The Office of Community College Research and Leadership (OCCRL) (within the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) selected Dr. Antonio Jackson, FTCC Dean of Arts and Humanities, and Dr. DeSandra Washington, Associate Vice President for Academic Support.
Leaders from Fayetteville Tech nominated Jackson and Washington for their exemplary work in serving and supporting racially minoritized students on the College’s campus. The fellowship offers the opportunity to serve as key contributors to a network of practitioners that will provide both the central hub for knowledge in culturally responsive practices and policies at community colleges and advocates for its scaling nationwide.
As a fellow, Jackson and Washington will each receive a $3,000 stipend to support their efforts in providing culturally responsive support on the FTCC campus and public recognition of the award. Jackson and Washington will also actively engage with OCCRL in a participatory research project that includes attending three 2-day face-to-face convenings in Chicago, Illinois.
Fayetteville Technical Community College was established in 1961 and serves over 38,000 students annually by providing over 250 occupational, technical, general education, college transfer, and continuing education programs to meet students’ needs and desires as well as the community.
