FTCC softball team raises funds for the fight against all cancer.

By:  Debbie Smith, FTCC Sports Information Director

The Fall season is the time of year when you would typically see brightly colored Cancer Awareness ribbons displayed throughout the city of Fayetteville.  This year, FTCC’s softball team is changing up the tradition up a bit.  Team members have begun a “Teams Against Cancer” campaign and are working tirelessly to raise money for the cause.  In their free time, between classes, homework and softball practice, the team has been cutting out colorful ribbons and selling them to raise money to support a cure for all cancers.  Softball Coach, John Newman says, “Cancer is a disease that has impacted most of our families,” Newman’s mother is a cancer survivor and knows first-hand how it affects not only the victim, but family members as well.

By purchasing a two-dollar ribbon, you can help our women Trojans raise money and meet their goal of more than two thousand dollars.  All proceeds will go to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund which was established in December 2007.  Yow’s vision is to support advanced research, extend the quality of life for those battling cancer, serve the underserved, and unite people.  FTCC Director for Intercollegiate Athletics, Dr. Shannon Yates says, “it was a pleasure to work with Coach Yow for 24 years and I look forward to raising as much money as we can to support the fight against cancer.  She was an amazing head coach and champion of cancer awareness within the women’s basketball community.  Her legacy lives on as more sports, athletics and coaches, embrace the cause to help those who suffer from this devastating disease.
