SUMMARY:Lafayette Lecture: Kiffin Rockwell & the Lafayette Escadrille
DESCRIPTION:The Fall 2024 Lafayette Lecture will be held at 1pm on Friday\, Sept. 6\, in the Multi-Purpose Room in FTCC’s Tony Rand Student Center. Admission is free. The public is welcome. \nThe lecture will focus on Kiffin Rockwell and the Lafayette Escadrille\, a French fighter squadron in the early days of World War I that was comprised mostly of volunteer pilots from the United States. In May 1916\, Rockwell became the first American to shoot down an enemy aircraft. The Lafayette Escadrille was named for the Marquis de Lafayette\, the French hero of the American Revolution (and the namesake of Fayetteville\, NC\, and many other US communities). \nThe lecture will be presented by Mark Trapp\, author of “A Destiny of Undying Greatness: Kiffin Rockwell and the Boys Who Remembered Lafayette.” \nThe lecture will be held on the 267th anniversary of the Marquis de Lafayette’s birthday\, celebrated each year by the Lafayette Society in Fayetteville. It is part of FTCC’s Community History Lecture Series and is presented in partnership with the Lafayette Society.

Governor’s Working Group on Service Members\, Veterans\, and Their Families will hold its quarterly meeting at FTCC’s Tony Rand Student Center on Thursday\, Sept. 12\, to discuss challenges and potential solutions to supporting military service members who are transitioning into civilian life. \nThe meeting will be preceded by an hour-long session featuring community vendors and exhibitors\, starting at noon. \nThe meeting will begin at 1pm in the Multi-Purpose Room. \nOpening remarks will be made by Sara McEwen\, executive director of the Governor’s Institute; Grier Martin\, secretary of the N.C. Department of Military & Veterans Affairs; and Fayetteville Mayor Mitch Colvin. \nThe opening remarks will be followed by an expert panel discussion on “Team Transitions: Exploring & Engaging Family and Community Supports for Veterans.” The panel will include: \n\nModerator: Joel Brown\, an ABC11 anchor and reporter\nDr. Christina Vair\, a psychologist and director of the Whole Health Program at the Salisbury VA Medical Center\nCSM Greg Seymour\, Fort Liberty Garrison Command Sergeant Major \nScot McCosh\, senior director of Military & Veterans Programs at FTCC\n\nThe public is invited to attend and individuals may register if they wish to comment. SUMMARY:North Carolina Hate Crimes Forum
DESCRIPTION:FTCC faculty\, staff\, and students are invited to attend an informational forum at the College on Thursday\, Sept. 19\, that will be focused on hate crime laws and reporting as well as approaches to combating and responding to bias incidents and hate crimes. \nThe North Carolina Hate Crimes Forum will provide community members and law enforcement with information related to the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd\, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act\, as well as state and local hate crimes laws. The program engages local and federal law enforcement\, district attorneys\, civil rights organizations\, and community organizations in discussions and information-sharing on methods to combat and respond to bias incidents and hate crimes. \nThis forum includes the following components: \n\nA panel of law enforcement experts to provide an overview of federal\, state and local hate crimes laws.\nA panel of community resources to discuss resources in the aftermath of bias incidents or hate crimes.\nA panel of survivors to discuss their personal experiences of being targeted by hate and how these incidents affected the panelists’ sense of wellbeing\, safety and inclusion. (This session will not be available virtually.)\n\nAttendees will have the opportunity to ask questions after the conclusion of each of the three panels. \nAccording to Justice Department data\, reported hate crimes in North Carolina increased from 186 in 2020 to 330 in 2022 – an increase of 77% in just two years. \nThe forum will be from 9 am to 2 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Tony Rand Student Center\, with check-in beginning at 8:30 am. Attendance is free but advance registration is required because breakfast and lunch will be provided. The deadline to register is 11:59 pm on Friday\, Sept. 13. There is a virtual option for those who cannot attend in person; information for that option is also available at the registration link. \nSponsors and presenters for the forum include: the Fayetteville-Cumberland Human Relations Department\, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina\, the Federal Bureau of Investigation\, the N.C. Department of Justice\, the N.C. Human Relations Commission\, the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation\, the Fayetteville Police Department\, the Fair Housing Project of Legal Aid of North Carolina\, and Fayetteville Technical Community College.
