SUMMARY:Author Talk & Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Fayetteville Technical Community College is pleased to host J. Rich Leonard\, Dean of the Campbell University Law School\, for a talk about his memoir “From Welcome to Windhoek: A Judge’s Journey.” Leonard will speak at 1:30pm in Cumberland Hall Auditorium. A book signing will follow. The event is free and open to the public. Copies of Leonard’s book are available for purchase at City Center Gallery & Books in downtown Fayetteville and online. \nThe book is described as follows: “This is the remarkable story of how a boy from rural Welcome\, North Carolina\, grew up to become an innovative judge\, global citizen\, and go-to guy for court-building in emerging African nations. Along the way\, he organizes the first-ever judicial conference in Tanzania\, jogs with children in Lusaka\, dances with a python\, and has adventures ranging from the harrowing to the hilarious. In the end\, he discovers the distance between Welcome and Windhoek is not as great as he imagined\, and that both places now occupy adjoining spaces in his heart.”

SUMMARY:Lafayette Lecture: Kiffin Rockwell & the Lafayette Escadrille
DESCRIPTION:The Fall 2024 Lafayette Lecture will be held at 1pm on Friday\, Sept. 6\, in the Multi-Purpose Room in FTCC’s Tony Rand Student Center. Admission is free. The public is welcome. \nThe lecture will focus on Kiffin Rockwell and the Lafayette Escadrille\, a French fighter squadron in the early days of World War I that was comprised mostly of volunteer pilots from the United States. In May 1916\, Rockwell became the first American to shoot down an enemy aircraft. The Lafayette Escadrille was named for the Marquis de Lafayette\, the French hero of the American Revolution (and the namesake of Fayetteville\, NC\, and many other US communities). \nThe lecture will be presented by Mark Trapp\, author of “A Destiny of Undying Greatness: Kiffin Rockwell and the Boys Who Remembered Lafayette.” \nThe lecture will be held on the 267th anniversary of the Marquis de Lafayette’s birthday\, celebrated each year by the Lafayette Society in Fayetteville. It is part of FTCC’s Community History Lecture Series and is presented in partnership with the Lafayette Society.
