Program Description

The Medical Office Administration curriculum prepares individuals for employment as medical administrative personnel in the areas of medical billing and coding, inpatient billing and coding, patient services, and introduced to advanced coding skills. Students will learn administrative and support functions and develop skills applicable in medical environments.

Course Work

Course work includes Billing and Insurance, Formatting, Information Systems, Legal and Ethical Issues, Medical Coding, Medical Terminology, Office Management, and Word Processing.

Students who complete this program are eligible and will gain the essential knowledge needed to take the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA), and Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) exams through the National Health career Association (NHA) as well as the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).  

Get an Internship

Students in the degree program are required to complete a 160-hour work-based learning internship as part of their program. Students in the diploma program are required to complete a 320 hour work-based learning internship as part of their program.

Upon completion of the Information Technology (IT) curriculum, students will be able to:

Bio: Larissa White serves as Department Chair for Healthcare Management Technology and Medical Office Administration. She brings extensive professional experience in health care operations, medical office leadership, and regulatory compliance, having served in leadership and management roles across diverse health care settings prior to transitioning into higher education. Her firsthand knowledge of clinical workflows, practice management, and organizational operations informs her approach to academic leadership and program development.

With a strong commitment to student success, she focuses on creating learning environments that connect theory to practice and prepare graduates for immediate impact in the workforce. She is dedicated to equipping students with the technical competence, professional confidence, and ethical foundation necessary to thrive in today’s health care environment.

Bio: Laura Honeycutt has been teaching Medical Office Administration courses at Fayetteville Technical Community College for over six years. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Management and Organizational Development, as well as a Master of Health Administration. Throughout her career, she has remained deeply committed to helping students build the knowledge, technical skills, essential soft skills, and confidence in themselves needed to succeed in today’s workforce. She strives to create a structured and supportive learning environment where students can connect what they learn in the classroom to practical, real-life experiences. A strong emphasis is placed on professionalism, communication, teamwork, and ethical behavior, as well as encouraging students to trust their abilities while gaining confidence. Her goal is to prepare students not only for academic achievement, but also to enter the healthcare workforce with integrity, compassion, and a belief in their own capabilities.

Outside of the classroom, Laura is a proud wife and mother of four, and family plays an important role in shaping her values and perspective. She values integrity, compassion, and kindness in action. She also strongly believes in the Golden Rule—treating others with respect, fairness, and kindness—and encourages students to carry this principle into both their personal lives and future careers.

Bio: Marjorie Parker is a full-time instructor in the Medical Office Administration program at Fayetteville Technical Community College with over eight years of teaching experience. She is a three-time graduate of Johnston Community College and hold a bachelor’s degree and MBA in Healthcare Management from University of Mount Olive. She maintains multiple certifications through AAPC, including CPC, CPB, COC, CIC, CRC, CPC-I, and CPMA.

Marjorie’s background includes experience as a CNA, phlebotomist, certified coder, and work in Home Health & Hospice billing and revenue integrity. She is passionate about teaching, mentoring students, and helping them achieve their professional goals. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband and kids, traveling, painting, and watching sports.

Bio: Kiara Skeeter, MBA is a Medical Office Administration Instructor at Fayetteville Technical Community College, where she teaches Medical Terminology, Introduction to Anatomy & Physiology, and Medical Law & Ethics. Additionally, she holds dual bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration and Health Administration from Fayetteville State University.

Kiara Skeeter brings a student-centered approach to the classroom, integrating healthcare knowledge, technology, and real-world applications to promote engagement and academic success. Her professional interests include healthcare administration, data analytics, leadership development, and workforce readiness in allied health education.
