1. What
do I need to do to get my VA Educational Benefits Started?
Come by the Veterans Services Office
as soon as possible to receive applications and forms required to start
VA educational benefits. You will be given a checklist of directions,
plus some basic information concerning the processes involved in getting
benefits.

2. How
much will I get paid?
Your pay is based on the chapter
for which you are eligible. See Pay Table.
Benefits are paid monthly, usually at the end of each month.
Some chapters require a monthly certification of attendance to release
payments.

3. When
can I expect my first pay check to arrive from VA?
Currently, it takes approximately
90-120 days for the VA to initiate and process an educational benefits
claim. Other requirements could delay or add to this time factor.
You are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

4. Will
the VA pay for my tuition and books?
No. The only VA program that
pays for tuition, fees, books and supplies is the Vocational Rehabilitation
program. All other VA educational benefits programs require the
veteran to pay educational costs out of their benefits payments.

5. If
I started school before being certified by the VA can I expect to get
back pay?
In some circumstances, the VA can
retroactively pay for periods of training up to one year FROM DATE OF
APPLICATION. Payments can only be paid for courses required for
graduation purposes in the program in which a Veteran is approved.

6. Do
I have to be a full time student before I will receive my veteran educational
benefits?
The VA will pay students who are
attending full time (12 hours or more), three quarter time (9 to 11
hours), and half time (6 to 8 hours.) "See
Pay Table".
If you're training at less than
one-half time, VA will pay you for the tuition and fees of your course
or courses. This payment will be prorated monthly.

7. Where
do I apply for the VA Work-Study program?
The Veterans Services office usually
receives requests for Work-Study positions from outside agencies approved
for this program. The student is directed to these positions as
they become available. The VSO has the application form needed
to apply for a Work-Study job.

8. Are
my VA Educational benefits taxable?
No. Benefits received from
the VA (including VA Work-Study), are not taxable income.

9. While
using VA benefits am I eligible to receive other financial aid?
Yes! Veterans should apply
for all other types of financial aid. Each form of aid has criteria
which will determine receipt of any awards. See
FTCC's Financial Aid Page.
