Listening Exercise for Chapter 5

Go to the following link and answer the following questions about Renaissance instruments.  Be sure to listen to them as well.  Note you can listen by clicking on the picture or by clicking on the mp3 link.  Save your answers in a word processor and send them to me via the Student Digital Drop Box (under Student Tools).

1.  Click on and listen to the Crumhorn.  What is the meaning of the root "crum" ?

2.  Click on and listen to the Gamba.  A gamba is a type of viol.  How many strings did most viols have?

3.  Click on and listen to the Harpsichord.  Are the strings in a harpsichord plucked or hit with a hammer?

7.  Click on and listen to the Serpent.  How many feet long is the conical tube of the serpent?

8.  Click on and listen to the Shawm.  What was the non-musical use sometimes found for the instrument?

9.  Click on and listen to the Transverse Flute.  What is the earliest citing of the transverse flute in art?

10.  Click on and listen to the Zink.  Not much breath is needed to play the Zink.  What is the "Guiness-type world record" mentioned in the paragraph?
