WELCOME TO
THE SIMULATION LAB
for HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAMS
During the Fall Semester 2009, FTCC gathered a Task Force of faculty from numerous Health Programs (Associate Degree Nursing, Practical Nursing, Nursing Assistant, Emergency Medical Services, Respiratory Therapy and Dental Hygiene) to develop a dedicated lab area devoted to teaching with the use of high fidelity human patient simulators. Students began using the lab as part of their educational process Spring Semester of 2010. This lab allows students the opportunity to develop their critical thinking skills in a simulated clinical environment with the absolute safety of no harm to any real patients.
Simulation as a Substitute for Clinical Time
- The National League for Nursing (NLN) supports and encourages that a part of clinical time be spent in simulation lab. There are many things students are not legally allowed to do in clinical – such as calling a physician for orders – and this very important type of communication can be practiced in the Sim Lab.
- High fidelity human patient simulators have many programmable features such as heart, lung and bowel sounds, vital signs, pulses, and capillary refill. We have manikins that can sweat, talk, and even deliver a baby. Simulated Clinical Experiences are designed with specific goals and objectives related to any chosen disease process (such as diabetes, asthma, angina, etc).
