A.C.T. ASSAILANT COUNTERING TACTICS/
WOMENS SELF DEFENSE        Fee: $35
A.C.T. is a women's self-empowerment, awareness and protection course. It is designed to teach you how to defend yourself physically as well as consciously and subconsciously against predatory assailants. There will be in-depth content consisting of lecture, home study and physical defense practice. We ask that you dress comfortably as there will be real-life scenarios acted out for hands-on practice. We also ask that you keep an open mind about the content, as discussion will include situations that others have encountered. The textbook: A.C.T. Assailant Countering Tactics – A Women's Guide to Self-Empowerment is required and can be purchased from the instructor at the first class—textbook fee is $12.95. Although the class is designed primarily for women, men are welcome to attend. Your instructor has over 13 years of experience in self-protection and criminal profiling. This is a self-supporting course; fee-exempt status does not apply.

CERT 317-DISASTER PREPAREDNESS FOR CITIZENS          Fee: FREE

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program is sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security and provides the basic training to help our citizens take care of themselves and then help others in their communities for the first three days following a disaster. This course consists of 22 hours of training in such areas as disaster preparedness, fire suppression, medical operations, search and rescue, disaster psychology, and terrorism. The course is designed to be of value to private citizens, businesses, churches, and schools that want the skills and knowledge required to prepare and respond to a disaster. After receiving this training, you will have a greater understanding of what you need to do to prepare yourself and your family for situations such as Hurricane Katrina or 9/11. DARKNESS TO LIGHT "STEWARDS OF CHILDREN" (D2L)        Fee: FREE
Darkness to Light "Stewards of Children" is sponsored by the Child Advocacy Center and is appropriate for parents as well as professionals who work with children or staff and volunteers in youth serving organizations. D2L is a compelling three-hour class that teaches adults how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. Statistics indicate that one in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused before they reach the age of 18. In this class, participants will learn how they can help protect children in our community from this devastating tragedy.

JAPANESE CULTURE AND TRADITION        Fee: $45
If you have always been fascinated by the serenity and beauty of Japan and her people, this is your opportunity to experience the culture of this ancient land. Etsuko will introduce you to traditional Japanese arts and crafts of her country, including origami, Sumi calligraphy, and Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging). You will learn how to make a kimono by hand, participate in a tea ceremony, and be introduced to the Japanese language. If time permits, a visit to a traditional Japanese garden and teahouse is planned.

MEDIATION TRAINING        Fee: $75
Mediation is a voluntary process for resolving disputes through compromise. Disputants meet in an informal, private setting with two mediators to discuss the issues and reach a mutually satisfactory agreement on what steps to take to settle the dispute. Mediators are volunteers who have completed training to include basic listening skills, building trust, reducing defensive responses, court procedures, and staying neutral. Won't you join the Cumberland County Dispute Resolution Center to help provide this valuable service to county residents who find themselves unable to resolve problems with family members, neighbors, landlords/tenants, customers/businesses, or claims over money or personal property. NATURAL HAIR BRAIDING (BEGINNING)        Fee: $45
This course is designed to teach basic hair braiding techniques. It's for anyone that has wanted to learn to braid hair. Proper grooming will be taught and tools will be used for maintaining natural virgin hair to include combing, brushing, parting, and sectioning. Individual braids as well as cornrows will be taught. You will learn how to apply beads and artificial hair to all hair types. Join Airaina, a certified cosmetology instructor, as she shows you the proper way to groom and maintain your locks. RECOGNIZING AND REPORTING CHILD ABUSE        Fee: FREE
Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse (R&R) is sponsored by the Child Advocacy Center and is an essential training component for staff and volunteers working in youth-serving organizations. It is also appropriate for parents and other concerned adults. Child abuse is an epidemic in our society; it is a community problem and requires community solutions. In this class, participants will learn the four types of child abuse, how to recognize the signs, and what, when, and how to report suspicions of child abuse. Participants will also learn Internet safety tips. You are welcome to bring a bag lunch.

WINE APPRECIATION        Fee: $50
Join certified Sommelier Kristine Miller as you learn the fundamentals of wine. This exciting class focuses on everything you need to know to gain a solid understanding of the complexities of wine. The class will cover wine regions; grape varieties; wine making techniques; purchasing, storing, and serving wine, and pairing wine with food. The class also covers the art of tasting and analyzing wines. You will have the opportunity to sample and evaluate different wines as you begin to develop and enhance your ability to taste wine. Kristine will use her experience gained from years in the industry as both a manager and educator, including time spent as a Sommelier at two Five Diamond restaurants, to instruct you. This class is excellent for individuals at all skill levels from those just venturing into the world of wine to the connoisseur; as well as restaurant industry professionals.
