ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS FOR THE HOME LANDSCAPE        Fee: $30
Adding year-round color to your home landscape can be easier than you think.  Understanding how to use annuals and perennials is an affordable way to enhance your basic landscape with personality and vibrancy.  From that cottage garden look to an understated woodland planting, even a drought tolerant rock garden. Learn how to design, purchase, install, and maintain these staples of the home garden.

BONSAI (INTERMEDIATE)        Fee: $35
Once you have completed the beginner's level of Bonsai, continue your learning by attending the intermediate Bonsai class. At this level, you will do more designing of your own trees to expose their "essence". Through the art of Bonsai you will learn how to tell the story of each tree through illusion. One difficult aspect of Bonsai is the development of style, the final design reached. One method of developing that style is to copy known successful designs. One must study different Bonsai masters to gain an understanding of how to develop the plant through correct pruning. Each week you will be asked to bring a plant to design and tools with help from your instructor. Your instructor has prepared a reference book that will help you in all aspects of developing a Bonsai. You will be required to read sections each week on plant selection, root pruning, trimming, watering, and feeding-everything you need to know.

CONTAINER GARDENING        Fee: $25
Learn the basics of using containers as a way to extend your growing space. This is a hands-on course that will teach you how to plan, select, plant, and maintain your own container garden. The second class will be devoted to assembling your project.

FLORAL ARRANGING (BEGINNING)        Fee: $45
This basic course will include lecture, demonstration, and hands-on practice in the principles and elements of floral design. You will learn designs for special occasions or locations, how to cut and wire fresh flowers (Ohashi only), as well as how to prepare dried and silk arrangements. (Students must purchase their own supplies). You will understand how color and texture affects your designs and how to choose containers and accessories appropriate for various arrangements. Please bring a vinyl table cover to class.

HERB GARDENING FOR BEGINNERS        Fee: $25
Fresh herbs are increasingly used in the preparation of food but also as an aromatic and wonderful way to add color to landscapes and container gardens. See how easy it is to start growing your own herb garden. Emphasis will be on choosing soil, fertilizer, location for the plants, and use of herbs once harvested.

HOME GARDENING BASICS        Fee: $25
This course is an introduction for the beginning gardener. Topics included are: soil and site preparation, plant materials, installation, and basic maintenance techniques. This course is designed as a prerequisite for many other courses. This is a recommended first course for other courses offered by Dawn Adkins-Hurley.

LANDSCAPING FOR THE SANDHILLS HOMEOWNER        Fee: $45
Here's the basic course for the homeowner on a budget or the do-it-yourselfer who enjoys gardening. Sessions will cover information on soil preparation, proper planting procedures, watering for a water wise garden, and fertilizing. The class includes lots of landscaping tips and field trips for hands-on problem solving.

LIVING WREATHS        Fee: $25
Create a beautiful living wreath versatile enough to change with all the seasons. We have all seen them, the beautiful wreaths on front doors and fences that each season brings. Let Dawn show you how to create pansies and impatiens wreaths for the spring and summer. PRE-REGISTRATION IS RECOMMENDED DUE TO LIMITED ENROLLMENT.

PERFECTING YOUR PRUNING        Fee: $20
Proper pruning is necessary to maintain a tree's shape and health. This is a hands-on workshop for the gardener who wants to know more about what, when, and how to prune ornamentals in their landscape. Bring your favorite pruning tool, gloves, long sleeve shirt, and hat. Safety glasses are recommended. Power tools and chain saws will not be used in this workshop and should not be brought to class.

ROSE GARDENING FOR BEGINNERS        Fee: $25
Get all the tips you need to grow beautiful roses with a minimum of care. Learn how to plant and maintain your rose garden in containers or in garden beds. Feeding and disease and insect control techniques will be covered.

SOIL TESTING: GETTING TO KNOW YOUR DIRT        Fee: $25
Are you one of the thousands of homeowners and or gardeners who "guesstimate" when it comes to what to add to your soil? Or maybe you remember granddaddy throwing lime on the lawn every spring...so when spring hits you just throw it out. Let George help you take the confusion out of soil testing and soil test reading and leave you with the knowledge and understanding of what your soil needs to produce lush green lawns and gardens. There is a three-week break between classes to allow test results to return.
