Equipment And Auxiliary Aids

Fayetteville Technical Community College has the following equipment available for use by students with documented disabilities. The majority of the equipment has been provided through funding from the Carl Perkins Vocational Education Act.

I.

Franklin spellers - Provides phonetic spelling corrections and spelling verification.  Students with learning disabilities may find the Franklin Spellers useful.

II. 

Digital tape recorders/players:

A.

May be recommended for the student with different learning styles and specific learning disabilities (SLD).

B.

Cassette Tape Recorder/Player- Specifically designed for listening to books on tape and for the recordings for the blind and students with dyslexia.

III.

Headsets with microphones- Assists students with their language skills

IV.

Portable CD Players- Compatible with audio books from the Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic

V.

ZoomText magnification software - Recommended for visually impaired (low vision) students.

VI.

Kurzweil 3000-Scans and enlarges documents for the visually impaired

VII.

Humanware MyReader

A.

Full-size Magnification  system for the visually impaired

B.

Portable Magnifier-Smaller version for easy accessibility

VIII.

TTY (Text Telephone for the Deaf) - Used by hearing and speech impaired who are unable to use a telephone in the usual way.

IX.

Steady Write Sta-Pen- Assists students with orthopedic challenges

Equipment Loan Program

Students who are registered with the Special Populations office are allowed to visit our office to use the above items to enhance their learning in the classroom. Some of the equipment may be checked out at the beginning of each semester and returned at the conclusion of each semester.  Renewal of equipment may be granted by submitting a written request to the Special Populations office.  Students are required to enter into an Equipment Agreement prior to the issuance of any equipment.  The student is responsible for the item and any supplies needed to operate the item (batteries, tapes, etc.) Students are not allowed to loan the equipment to other students.
