Summer Programs for School-Age Children

This is a list of Summerscapes classes running from June-August. Classes may be added to the schedule as needed. The Community College can offer these self-supporting courses only during the summer, so take advantage of these enjoyable, inexpensive learning opportunities for your child.


REGISTRATION

You may register your child at the Records and Registration Office in the Neill Currie Center for Continuing Education at 2201 Hull Road. When registering for classes, please fill out the necessary forms at the registration window.

Drop Off/Pick Up

For security purposes, you will be required to accompany your child to and from the classroom each day. There is a sign-in and sign-out sheet that is required for the release of the children and since we do not provide childcare between classes please do not drop your children off early. Also, the children will need to be picked up promptly after class ends. Failure to pick up a child immediately after the end of class may result in a dismissal of the student from the program. Summerscapes students are covered under the existing accident insurance policy. You are welcome to stay in the building where your child’s class is, but we ask that you do not remain in the classroom.

Classes are held at various on and off campus locations to include the Continuing Education Center (CEC), Cumberland Hall Auditorium (CUH-Aud), Horace Sisk (HOS), Advanced Technology Center (ATC), Virtual College Center (VCC), and the Horticulture Education Center (HEC).

Supplies

Please note that some of the classes have a supply fee and others require that supplies be brought to class. These additional fees will be kept as low as possible. See class descriptions for details.

Creative Writing (Rising 6th – 8th Graders)

Do you enjoy writing in a journal but often struggle with what words to use? Join us and learn the techniques of creative writing! This class will help you write what you want to write in the most creative way possible. You will learn how to make a story come alive and learn tips and tricks to make your writing the best it can be!

Supplies: Please bring a notebook and pencil to class each day.

Crimebusters (Rising 7th – 9th Graders)

Solving the mystery is an exciting part of working as a forensic investigator. In this class, you will learn the true role a forensic specialist has in solving a crime. The instructor of this class will guide your step-by-step in solving a hypothetical crime, to include using the science and techniques used by the FBI.


EOG Prep (Rising 4th – 6th Graders)

When you hear the word EOG does your stomach do somersaults? If so then this is the course for you. In this course, you will learn research based strategies that are proven to help you make growth as well as pass the EOG test. You will leave with confidence and strategies that will equip you to succeed! We will learn these strategies in a hands-on, interactive way!

Forensics (Rising 7th – 9th Graders)

In this unique and interesting class, you will learn how science applies to the law. Through hands on experiences, you will learn processes that are applied in real life to solve crimes, such as finger printing and footwear impressions. You will be able to understand how your education in science can turn into a fast paced, fun, and exciting career!


Math Refresher (Rising 3rd and 4th Graders)

In this program, students will be challenged to recall previously learned math concepts, improve on them, and learn new mathematical formulas through hands-on math activities appropriate for each age group.

In this program, students will be challenged to recall previously learned math concepts, improve on them, and learn new mathematical formulas through hands-on math activities appropriate for each age group.


Reading Camp (Rising 1st and 2nd Graders)

In this class, students will learn to enjoy reading with fun and educational activities. Students will participate in interactive lessons to help them improve in phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension skills, and independent reading. Through the guidance of their teacher, students will become more comfortable in word recognition and enjoy reading!


Reading Camp (Rising 3rd and 4th Graders)

In this class, students will practice their fluency and decoding skills to enable them to comprehend more as they read independently. The teacher will guide the class in interactive lessons as they practice reading at higher levels to align with EOG, reading 3D, and RTA goals.


Reading Camp (Rising 5th and 6th Graders)

In this class, students will work closely with the teacher to complete fluency and high-level comprehension techniques. Students will improve their reading speeds as they are introduced to the best ways to read textbooks and novels, take notes, and study for exams. The skills learned in this course will benefit students when testing for the EOG and moving on to middle school.


Reading Club (Rising 4th – 6th Graders)

Do you like to laugh, have fun, and go on an adventure? If so then join our Summerscapes Reading Club! During this class we will read intriguing novels about many interesting and funny characters! We will role-play the various characters and have a blast reading and engaging in different novels!

Remedial Reading (High School)

This class is for students looking to improve their reading skills over the summer. Perhaps you have a summer reading list you need to tackle or you need that extra boost to prepare for your literature class next year. This course will provide grade level appropriate guidance to enhance your reading and literary skills.

Remedial Reading (Middle School)

This class is for students looking to improve their reading skills over the summer. Robotics Camp (Rising 3rd – 5th Graders)

Looking for new activities to inspire your child outside of school? Three words: Robotics for Kids! Robotics for Kids uses fun, hands-on projects to get your child’s creative juices flowing. Your child will learn how to build and program robots with bricks and software — all while making friends, developing new skills and having a great time with STEM. For many kids, robotics class is a highlight of their week.

All Mixed Up (Ages 12-16)

Using paper, canvas, pencils, charcoal, watercolor, acrylics, and other mediums, you will enjoy creating unique, fun, and interesting works of art. Using composition, light, and elements of design, along with student imagination, you will create many masterpieces!

Anime Drawing (Ages 10-15)

If you love drawing, sketching, and Anime, this is the class for you! Join the fun for a tutorial on drawing your favorite Anime characters. This class will teach you how to make them come to life on paper! Any level of skill is welcome.

Supplies: Please bring a drawing pad and pencils to class each day.


Canvas Camp (Ages 10-15)

This class is perfect for young artists! In this class, you will create a beautiful work of art, and everyone will leave with a finished painting. Come join the group as we discover the artist inside! What a wonderful way for you to explore your creativity!

Supplies: Please ask for a supply list at the time of registration.


Digital Photography (Ages 12-15)

Come learn how much fun photography can be. You will learn how a digital camera works, how to handle the camera safely, and how to take a good photograph. You will also learn how to scan photographs and how to transfer images from CD’s to create photos on your computer. Your instructor will show you how to edit your photos and how to use special effects.

Supplies: Please bring your digital camera and instruction manual to class on the first day.


Drawing 101 (Ages 10-12)

Do you like to doodle or draw? If you would like to try your hand at art, then this is the easy way. You will learn how to put what you see on paper. We will go over the basics of drawing including shading, one-point perspective, and lines. You will take home ideas that you can practice and bring back for the next class. Your instructor will give you exercises that you can continue to do at home to help expand your artistic talent, and you’ll have finished art work that you can frame and hang at home or give as gifts.

Mosaic Art (Ages 10-13)

Mosaics are many small pieces that make up a bigger picture. This class will introduce you to many ways you can make mosaics including paper, beads, tiles, and more! Join us for this fun class and make many different kinds of mosaics with us!

Origami: Japanese Paper Folding (Ages 8-12)

Origami is the Japanese art of folding paper into shapes. In this course, you will learn how to make frogs that jump, flowers, a crane, and other animals! Emphasis will be placed upon learning an easy paper craft that will be used to create colorful paper sculptures. You will also learn how this paper folding technique can be used to make boxes, note cards, swans, and other traditional origami sculptures.

Play Writing (Ages 9-12)

Do you have a flair for drama or love performing? Maybe you have dreams being a part of the theater. Learn how to write a play for you and your friends to perform! Join this fun, interactive class where you can create your own story and see it come to life on stage!


Sculpture (Ages 8-12)

Anything is possible with a little bit of imagination! For children who love to build and construct things, this class will be a hit! Each day, the children will have a great time creating sculptures from various materials (clay, cardboard, wire, foam, and much more). Working with an array of materials and techniques, students will explore color, texture, and form. Several of the projects give students the artistic freedom to create from their imaginations and make each creation unique and their very own!

Stained Glass Sun Catchers (Ages 14-16)

Explore the beautiful art of stained glass by creating your own sun catcher. Learn all the basic techniques of the copper foil method-patterning, cutting, soldering and go home with a completed project to show off your new glass artistry. You’ll learn about different types of glass and color arrangement. When class is finished, you will have the necessary skills and materials to continue the craft on your own.

Watercolor (Ages 12-15)

Come and explore the world of painting with watercolors! This class is designed to make you more familiar with watercolor paints and how to uses them to create masterpieces! You will create works of art that you can share with your family and friends with the guidance of our instructor.

Writing & Illustrating a Book (Ages 11-15)

Are you a writer who likes to draw? An artist who likes to write? Join us and design your own book! You will create a book cover, write the text and illustrate your book. It could be a book of rhymes or a book about animals. You can write about anything you can imagine.

Young Picasso (Ages 8-12)

In this class, you will be introduced to some of the greatest artists the world has known. Students will learn interesting facts and stories, presented at an age-appropriate level, about artists such as Van Gogh, Warhol, Pollock, and Picasso. Following each informative lesson, children will complete works of art that represent the style and techniques used by the famous artist. Each artist that will be studied in this curriculum was thoughtfully selected to allow students to experience different styles, time periods, and be exposed to a variety of art mediums.

Chef For A Day

Age Group(s): 8-10 & 11-13
Kids! If you enjoy being inventive in the kitchen, and you would like to learn how to make creative treats, this is the class for you! Our instructor will introduce you to the fundamental skills used in cooking along with how to properly measure and combine colorful ingredients to make delicious and unique treats. Come and join in the fun and experience being a chef for the day. .

Creative Cupcakes

Age Group(s): 10-12 & 13-15
Colorful cupcakes are a great way to celebrate any occasion and serve as a delicious treat! Come join the fun and discover just how simple it can be to create your very own cupcake designs!

Culinary Skills

Age Group(s): 13-16
Do you like to cook? If so, come learn from our experienced instructor! In this class you will learn some tips that will help you in the kitchen! Learning how to safely use a knife, different cooking methods, kitchen science, and kitchen safety and sanitation are just a few of the things you will learn! Join us and sharpen your culinary knowledge and skills!

Global Cuisine

Age Group(s): 11-13 & 14-16
Join us for a culinary trip around the world! In this class you will learn recipes from countries like Thailand, India, Italy, and many more! This course will expand your knowledge of different cuisines from around the globe!

Pastabilities

Age Group(s): 8-10
There are so many options when it comes to pasta! Join us to learn how to make homemade pasta and the many ways we can use pasta in meals! From macaroni to fettuccine to spaghetti and more! Oh, the pastabilities!

Pizza Party!

Age Group(s): 10-15
Who doesn’t love yummy pizza? Join us in a hands-on pizza class and learn how to build a pie completely from scratch! From homemade dough to fresh marinara sauce, your pizzas will taste spectacular! You will also learn unconventional ways to build pizzas such as using cauliflower for crusts and apples for toppings. A pizza party is the perfect way to spend your summer day!

Sweet Treats

Age Group(s): 12-15
Come and learn how to make the most delicious sweets and desserts! Your instructor will show you how to make delicious and beautiful desserts you can share with your family and friends. Be prepared to bake, whisk and mix up some very sweet treats!

What’s for Dinner

Age Group(s): 10-12 & 13-15
Are you always asking the question, “What’s for dinner?” Take charge and learn how to meal plan and prepare for your own family! In this class, you will learn how to plan a menu and prepare a wholesome dinner for yourself and your family at home. Join us and learn how to help out and create dinners of YOUR choice!

Fun Adventures with Worms, Butterflies, Birds, & Bees!

Age Group(s): 8-11
Let your child explore the world of garden friends as they experience hands on activities and live demonstrations with worms, butterflies, birds and bees. Students will learn about vermiculture, beekeeping and more and create their own projects to take home! This class will cultivate your child’s knowledge of their role in caring for, protecting, and creating a habitat for these animals.

Pixie Gardens

Age Group(s): 10-13
A pixie garden is a miniature garden complete with structures and living plants! In this class you will learn all about small plants and their uses. Join us as we clone a new plant from an existing one, seed new flowers, and learn about cherry tomatoes. This class will also get to tour the greenhouse and create your very own pixie garden!

Summer Potted Plants

Age Group(s): 8-11
Summertime flowers are beautiful and can brighten up any garden! In this class you will clone your own colorful plant and plant a variety of flowers to complete a hanging basket and patio planter you will enjoy all summer long! In this class you will also tour the FTCC Greenhouse to get some inspiration!

Drama Camp

Age Group(s): 9-12
Join us for this exciting new drama camp as we focus on acting, presentation, performance, and learn some of the top tips and tricks of this industry. On stage and behind the stage crew production will also be studied as you hone your craft and become a polished performer! Come and be a star with us!

Guitar

Age Group(s): 12-15
This course will focus on the fundamentals and techniques for beginning guitar players. Students will learn simple chords and progressions, receive some instruction in reading music notation and tablature, and learn to play a few simple songs and accompaniments.

Improv

Age Group(s): 12-15
Do you love making people laugh and always have jokes on hand? Attend this class to hone your improvisation skills so you can be prepared with your comedy skit when the moment hits! Students will be instructed using improvisation techniques that make your practice have a more personal feel. With this class, you’ll be able to think on your feet, actively listen, and communicate more effectively with others.

Intro to Film & Video

Age Group(s): 12-15
Are you a movie buff who loves watching films? Do you like to take video and create your own stories? Dive into this introduction to film and video course to learn how to create, produce, and edit your very own movie!

Piano

Age Group(s): 12-15
Have you always wanted to learn a musical instrument? Why don’t you start with the piano? In this short, informative class you will get a good start on this wonderful instrument. Our expert instructor will teach you the basics and give you some good lessons on how to start playing the piano!

Sew Cool! A Class for Girls & Dolls

Age Group(s): 9-11
Do you have a doll that you love to outfit and style? If so, join us for Sew Cool! In this fun class you will be able to make a project for you and your 18” doll while learning how to use the sewing machine! You and your doll will be so stylish in matching aprons, and will dazzle your friends and family with your sewing skills!

Sewing 101

Age Group(s): 10-12 & 13-15
Would you like to learn how to sew? In this course, students will participate in fun sewing activities that will introduce them to simple sewing techniques and the use of a sewing machine. Students will complete fun projects that will be made during the scheduled class time. Although this course is designed for beginners, intermediate-level students will also benefit from this instruction.

Sewing 102

Age Group(s): 13-15
Take your sewing skills to the next level in this intermediate-level class! Students who have taken Sewing 101 or those who have previous sewing experience will complete exciting projects and learn more about the functions of sewing machines. The class will allow students to work on and practice their existing techniques and build upon those to expand their sewing skills.

Golf 101

Age Group(s): 8-11 & 12-15
This course will help youth learn how to play golf the correct way! Golf 101 is designed to teach the beginning golf student as well as avid junior golfers the basic knowledge, skills and etiquette of the game. Students enrolled in this class will also learn the development of the full swing.

Kid’s Yoga

Age Group(s): 8-11
Our children live in such a busy world with each day full of activities. When children learn techniques for self-health, relaxation, and inner fulfillment, they can navigate life’s challenges with a little more ease. This class is designed for first time students and those who have some experience with yoga.

Teen Yoga

Age Group(s): 12-15
Yoga is a great exercise for the body and mind, and it will increase your awareness and your ability to reflect. Take a break from it all and join us to de-stress and have a wonderful yoga practice.

CPR for Babysitters

Babysitting can provide extra income and excellent experience for future job opportunities. One way to increase your services as a dependable babysitter is to become trained in CPR. Parents will appreciate that you have that extra training to better protect their children while they are under your care. In this course, you will obtain your CPR certification and receive helpful tips for handling the most common babysitter CPR emergencies.

Etiquette 101

Age Group(s): 8-12
This confidence building program is a well-balanced blend of traditional etiquette standards and contemporary manners for the 21st Century. It promotes leadership through etiquette and dining skills. This class is highly interactive and fun, and focuses on character education and positive self-esteem.

Etiquette 102

Age Group(s): 8-12
Etiquette for children is ranked as one of the most important qualities to succeed in life. Instilling good manners in some youth will feel like an almost impossible task. Don’t despair, this second level of our Etiquette series will expand upon skills learned in Etiquette 101 through practice and interactive lessons. Good manners are essential for every child’s self confidence and success in life and this course provides lessons useful for everyday life.

Pet Responsibility

Age Group(s): 8-10 & 11-13
Owning a pet is a lot of work! Come learn from the Cumberland County Animal Shelter volunteers what it takes to be a fantastic pet parent! This class will go over the many aspects of owning and raising a pet, what you can do to help the animal population in Cumberland County, and how working together can help animals everywhere!

Roadside Survival For Teenage Drivers

Age Group(s): 15-17
Are you going to be getting your license soon? If so, this class is perfect for you! Your instructor will walk you through many problems that can happen while driving and how to safely and efficiently fix them. This class will be partly indoors and partly outdoors where you will use all of your new knowledge to actually work on a car! This class will prepare you to safely deal with some of the most common roadside dilemmas such as flat tires, overheated engines, running out of gas, and getting locked out of your car.

2D Game Programming with Python

Age Group(s): 12-16
This course will explore techniques more in depth using Python. You will be able to do more with the program than ever before! Using the skills you gained in Part I, you will be able to continue your journey to creating a video game! NOTE: This class is designed for those students who have previous experience or for those who have taken Basic Game Programming with Python.

Animation for Beginners, Part I

Age Group(s): 12-16
Do you want to know what it takes to make those characters you see in video games? If so, join us for this introduction to 3D animation class! In this class you will use software that the professionals use to create realistic 3D images. Bring your imagination and let’s animate!

3D Animation for Beginners, Part II

Age Group(s): 12-16
Join us for the second part of this exciting course! In 3D Animation Part II you will learn more complex ways to animate. You will be able to use the knowledge learned from Part I to animate even more types of characters. Bring your ingenuity and let’s animate! NOTE: This class is designed for those students who have previous experience or have taken 3D Animation for Beginners, Part I.

Animated Movies with Adobe Flash

Age Group(s): 12-16
Students will create 2D animated movies similar to cartoons using Adobe Flash. Students will discuss using these animations on websites and as the basis for video games. Upon completion, students will have experience with computer-generated 2D animation.

Basic Game Programming with Python

Age Group(s): 12-16
This exciting class will introduce you to the Python programming language, a powerful and versatile scripting language which is used to program video games. You will learn programming concepts to create traditional 2D video games using packages of graphics tools.

Build Your Own Computer

Age Group(s): 12-16
Have you ever wondered what is inside a computer? In this class, you will discover the answer to that question and much more! Some things you will learn in this class include computer maintenance, networking, and security. You will also learn how to put a computer together from scratch, set up a home network, make cables, and secure your PC.

GUI Game Programming with Python

Age Group(s): 12-16
Students will continue using what they learn in Basic Game Programming with Python to construct graphical games using the Python language. Upon completion, students will have created 2D PC video games.

Making a Game with GameMaker

Age Group(s): 12-16
Do you ever wonder how your favorite video game is made? Then this is the class for you! This class is an introduction to video game development using the GameMaker software package. You will learn to create classical style 2D games using GameMaker’s easy to learn interface.
