The Corporate & Continuing Education Health programs provide students with the training and preparation needed for a career in the healthcare industry. Programs include Cardiovascular Monitor Technician, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) courses, Phlebotomy, and Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) courses.

Course Description

This course is designed and approved to prepare the student to become a certified EKG (ECG) and Technician/ Monitor. The course will cover the anatomy and physiology of the heart, principles of EKG, dysrhythmia recognition of sinus, junctional/atrial rhythms, heart blocks and bundle branches and ventricular ectopy rhythms. Skills will include operating EKG equipment, running and mounting strips as well as reading and interpreting 22 types of cardiac lead tracings produced from 12 and five lead monitors and to understand the basics of capnography as it relates to heart function.

Course Description

This course prepares graduates to provide personal care and perform basic nursing skills for the elderly and other adults. Emphasis is on the process of aging including mental, social, and physical needs of the elderly, patient rights, nutrition management, diseases/disorders, and human body structure and function, etc. The course includes class, laboratory, and clinical learning experience.

Please Note

Some clinical facilities require a criminal background check and drug screen prior to attending clinical rotation. If a student cannot meet the criminal background check requirements, he or she will not be able to complete the program and will be dismissed from the course WITHOUT a refund. (DO NOT obtain prior to starting the class! The instructor will inform you if the clinic you will attend requires this).

Course Requirements

  • Additional Fees: Background check: $30 Drug Screen: $8 (DO NOT obtain before starting the class, the instructor will inform you of the process)
  • Scrubs: Black bottoms/Caribbean Blue tops, REQUIRED 1st day of class (can be purchased at Castle Uniforms)

Course Description

The CNA I Refresher course provides an opportunity for nursing assistants to update their knowledge of personal care and basic nursing skills needed for care for patients. Upon completion of a written examination and a skills/competency evaluation, the graduate is eligible to put in an application for listing on the Nursing Aide I Registry, through the Division of Facility Services, as a North Carolina Community College Refresher Course candidate.

Course Description

The Nursing Assistant II course prepares graduates to perform more complex skills for patients or residents regardless of the setting. The course includes class, laboratory, and clinical learning experiences. Upon satisfactory completion of the course and skill/competency evaluation, the graduate is eligible to apply for listing as a Nurse Aide II with the North Carolina Board of Nursing Nurse Aide Registry. In all employment settings, the listed Nursing Assistant II will work under the direction and supervision of licensed personnel.

Course Description

Phlebotomy training prepares the student to draw blood specimens from patients for the purpose of testing and analyzing blood. A phlebotomist’s job includes maintenance of equipment used in obtaining blood specimens. Students will learn the use of appropriate communication skills when working with patients; the selection of venipuncture sites; the care of blood specimens; the entry of the testing process into the computer; as well as clerical duties associated with record keeping of the blood tests.

The course consists of theory and clinical experiences in performing blood collections. The course length is 240 hours. Emphasis is placed on safety and proper selection of collection sites and the care of the collected specimen. Infection control is covered, as well as an explanation of various legal and regulatory issues relating to phlebotomy. Other topics include the collection of other body fluids, body cavities, body functions, and structural levels of the human body.

Upon successful completion of this program, the student should be prepared to take the National Phlebotomy Certification Examination.

Course Description

The Registered Medical Assistant program is a two-part program for serious students interested in becoming multi-skilled front and back office medical assistants. Registered Medical Assistant I meets 390 hours and Registered Medical Assistant II meets 360 hours. Upon completion of Part 1 and Part 2 students will be able to sit for a National Medical Assistant examination through AMT.
