International Students

Steps to Apply to Fayetteville Technical Community College

An international student is one who needs a Form I-20 for a Student Visa in order to be eligible to study in
the United States. International applicants who apply from outside the United States and have not previously attended an American college or university will be processed as an entering freshman.

International applicants holding an F1 or M1 visa are admitted on a rolling basis. Applications will not be considered until all of the following items have been received:

Preliminary Application (Form A)
Financial Certificate (Form B)
– Official High School (Secondary) Transcript (Translated into English)
– Official College or University Transcripts Transcript(s) (Translated into English)
Pre-Entrance Medical Form
Affidavit of Support (I-134)
Student Responsibility Agreement
Transfer Form (if applicable)

Proficiency in the use of the English Language and past academic record will be important factors in the admission decision. Students will be required to take a placement test once admitted to FTCC.

As part of the admission process to FTCC and before an F1 or M1 visa approval is granted, applicants must show evidence of official financial support (Form B) for each year of study in the United States. The college cannot provide financial aid to students applying from other nations. Applicants must certify their financial support.

FTCC is tax supported by the people of North Carolina. Legal residents of North Carolina and the United States are given preference in the admissions process. Therefore, applications of international applicants are accepted only on a space availability basis.

On-Campus

F1 students are allowed to work part-time on the campus of the school they are attending. They may work up to 20 hours per week while attending classes full-time. They can work full-time during summer vacations and between terms, provided they continue at that school the following term. M1 students are not allowed to work on or off campus.

Off-Campus

Students holding F1 visas are not authorized to work off campus except under extraordinary circumstances. There are two ways to get permission for off-campus work:

  1. Practical training and severe economic hardship
  2. U.S. Customs and Immigration Services must grant permission

Admission into the United States on an F1 or M1 visa is for “duration of status” (D/S). This is the time estimated for program completion. During that time, students are required to make satisfactory progress each term, keep a current passport that is valid for at least six months into the future, and maintain a valid I-20.

Fayetteville Technical Community College serves an entirely commuting student body. Housing is not available on campus. International students must seek housing in the community and commute daily by public transportation. Arrangements for housing must be made between the landlord and the student.

International students must provide their own transportation or use public transportation to travel between the campus and their housing accommodations.

International students holding an F1 or M1 visa must enroll as a full-time student. College students must pass a minimum of 12 credits per semester. The student should make satisfactory progress in his/her approved program each semester. If 12 credits per semester are not maintained, the continuation of study on a student visa may be jeopardized and the I-20 will be rescinded.

Foreign applicants holding a visa other than an F1 or M1 may be admitted on a rolling basis. Your application will not be considered until all of the following items have been received:

– FTCC Admissions Application
– Presentation of Either a Valid Passport or Visa
– FTCC Entrance Assessment Results
– Official High School (Secondary) Transcript (Translated into English)
– Official College or University transcript(s) (Translated into English)

Note: Individuals holding a visitor’s visa (B) or a (J) visa are not eligible to enroll in curriculum classes.

Foreign applicants who have applied for or hold a valid Resident Alien Card may be admitted on a rolling basis. Your application will not be considered until all of the following items have been received:

FTCC Admissions Application
– Presentation of a Valid Resident Alien Card or Official Receipt of Application for Permanent U.S. Residence
FTCC Entrance Assessment Results
– Official High School (Secondary) Transcript (Translated into English)
– Official College or University transcript(s) (Translated into English)

Foreign applicants “who graduated from an American high school will be eligible to enroll. However, they will also be required to pay tuition at out-of-state rates — more than $7,000 a year — and will be ineligible for financial aid.” Undocumented applicants will not be approved into programs requiring a license and will be admitted on a rolling basis.

Note: Expenses may vary due to differences in curriculum material needed and fluctuation in living cost. Also, estimated expenses do not include transportation between FTCC and your home country.
