SIGN LANGUAGE TRAINING
DEAF CULTURE Fee:
$60
"Train go sorry" is an American Sign Language (ASL) idiom that means "missing
the boat" and is a good example of the miscommunication that often occurs
between deaf and hearing individuals. For those who have had little exposure
to the deaf community, misconceptions can exist. This course is designed
to help those who are learning sign language and preparing to become interpreters
to better understand the deaf, their language, and their culture. Through
visits with deaf individuals and reading stories and poems written by the
deaf, you will begin to understand the strong sense of pride the deaf have
in their culture. They form a distinct community of individuals whose history
and accomplishments are an important part of the training for anyone intending
to work as an interpreter or who has friends and/or family members who are
deaf.

INTERPRETING I Fee:
$60
Sign language interpreting is designed for students who have sign language
skills at the intermediate level. The role of the interpreter is to ensure
that there is accurate communication between the hearing and those who are
deaf or hearing impaired. Instruction will include an introduction to and
historical overview of the interpreting profession, an introduction to deaf
culture, the interpreter's code of ethics, public speaking techniques, and
guided practice in the skills of sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign communication.
It is not enough to just interpret the words spoken or signed; the interpreter
must also be able to relay the meaning of the message through an understanding
of the importance of feelings conveyed by the participants. Qualified
interpreters are in high demand and can be employed in a variety of situations,
including educational, medical, legal, religious, recreational, and/or personal.
