A.C.T. ASSAILANT COUNTERING TACTICS/WOMEN'S SELF-DEFENSE       Fee: $35

A.C.T. is a women's self-empowerment, awareness, and protection course. It is designed to teach you how to defend yourself physically as well as consciously and subconsciously against predatory assailants. There will be in-depth content consisting of lecture, home study, and physical defense practice. We ask that you dress comfortably as there will be real-life scenarios acted out for hands-on practice. We also ask that you keep an open mind about the content, as discussion will include situations that others have encountered. Textbook requirement: A.C.T. Assailant Countering Tactics – A Women's Guide to Self-Empowerment can be purchased from the instructor at the first class—textbook fee is $12.95. Although the class is designed primarily for women, men are welcome to attend. Your instructor has over 13 years of experience in self-protection and criminal profiling. This is a self-supporting course; fee-exempt status does not apply.

DARKNESS TO LIGHT "STEWARDS OF CHILDREN" (D2L)        Fee: FREE
Darkenss to Light "Stewards of Children" is sponsored by the Child Advocacy Center and is appropriate for parents as well as professionals who work with children or staff and volunteers in youth serving organizations. D2L is a compelling three-hour class that teaches adults how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. Statistics indicate that one in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused before they reach the age of 18. In this class, participants will learn how they can help protect children in our community from this devastating tragedy. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED AT LEAST ONE WEEK PRIOR TO START DATE.

DEATH AND FUNERALS: EVERYTHING YOU NEED
TO KNOW BUT ARE AFRAID TO ASK        Fee: $35
This course will provide information about a subject that we often brush aside, but need to know more about. Michael has many years of experience in this area and will share information on the history of funeral service, pre-arranged funerals, embalming, cremation, and alternatives to traditional funerals. He will help you gain the knowledge you need about funeral service rites and rituals. If students are interested, a field trip to a local funeral home will be arranged. Bring the questions you need answered and get the information you need to better understand this very necessary profession.

JAPANESE CULTURE AND TRADITION        Fee: $45
If you have always been fascinated by the serenity and beauty of Japan and her people, this is your opportunity to experience the culture of this ancient land. Etsuko will introduce you to traditional Japanese arts and crafts of her country, including origami, Sumi calligraphy, and Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging). You will learn how to make a kimono by hand, participate in a tea ceremony, and be introduced to the Japanese language. If time permits, a visit to a traditional Japanese garden and teahouse is planned.

MEDIATION TRAINING        Fee: $75
Mediation is a voluntary process for resolving disputes through compromise. Disputants meet in an informal, private setting with two mediators to discuss the issues and reach a mutually satisfactory agreement on what steps to take to settle the dispute. Mediators are volunteers who have completed training to include basic listening skills, building trust, reducing defensive responses, court procedures, and staying neutral. Won't you join the Cumberland County Dispute Resolution Center to help provide this valuable service to county residents who find themselves unable to resolve problems with family members, neighbors, landlords/tenants, customers/businesses, or claims over money or personal property. NATURAL HAIR BRAIDING (ADVANCED)        Fee: $45
This course is designed to teach advanced hair braiding techniques. Upon completion of this class you will be able to seal the ends of any braid style. Airaina will teach you how to prune braids and locs for the ultimate professional look. You will learn the art of styling braids and locs. NATURAL HAIR BRAIDING (BEGINNING)        Fee: $45
This course is designed to teach basic hair braiding techniques. It's for anyone that has wanted to learn to braid hair. Proper grooming will be taught and tools will be used for maintaining natural virgin hair to include combing, brushing, parting, and sectioning. Individual braids as well as cornrows will be taught. You will learn how to apply beads and artificial hair to all hair types. Join Airaina, a certified cosmetology instructor, as she shows you the proper way to groom and maintain your locks. This course is designed to teach intermediate hair braiding techniques. These will include: kinky twists, loc extensions, and Bantu knots. Airaina will show you how to maintain and care for your braids to keep them looking fresh, as well as general maintenance. General hair braiding skills are required to take this course. RAPE CRISIS SENSITIVITY TRAINING        Fee: $15
This course is conducted by the Rape Crisis Volunteers of Cumberland County and is designed to increase awareness in the community of rape and its effects on the victim and society. You will learn special counseling techniques that are used to help rape victims. It will cover medical, law enforcement, and legal procedures and will include a tour of area hospitals. Be your own hypnotherapist! Your instructor is a certified hypnotist who will guide you in a personalized self-hypnosis program in this fun, interactive class. You will gain a solid understanding of hypnosis, what it is, how it works, and how you can put it to work for you. YOGA (BEGINNING)        Fee: $35
This is a gentle yoga class that introduces the beginner to yoga stretches, poses, and breathing techniques that are beneficial to the body. Your instructor will place emphasis on good posture and body alignment. The class will be geared to the abilities of all attending, from the beginner who is curious about trying yoga to the experienced beginner who wants additional practice. NOTE: Bring your own yoga mat, wear fitted (loose clothing is discouraged) but not restrictive clothing, no shoes during class. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.
