COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TRAINING CERT 317-DISASTER PREPAREDNESS FOR CITIZENS        Fee: $25 The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program is sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security and provides the basic training to help our citizens take care of themselves and then help others in their communities for the first three days following a disaster. This course consists of 22 hours of training in such areas as disaster preparedness, fire suppression, medical operations, search and rescue, disaster psychology, and terrorism. The course is designed to be of value to private citizens, businesses, churches, and schools that want the skills and knowledge required to prepare and respond to a disaster. After receiving this training, you will have a greater understanding of what you need to do to prepare yourself and your family for situations such as Hurricane Katrina or 9/11. We are surrounded by toxic and deadly materials in our daily lives. Whether traveling down I-95 or responding to a disaster, we need to recognize that we are in the presence of hazardous materials, be able to react appropriately to chemical contaminations and dangers, and relay critical information to 911 or assist HazMat responders with the most timely response possible. In a mass casualty event, the number of lives saved is directly proportional to how fast the most severe casualties are treated. In order for this to happen, the casualties must first be assessed and categorized.
