Faculty Professional Development
Information
Faculty Handbook, II-6.1: Professional Education - Courses are taken to improve the instructional and technical skills of the faculty and the learning process for students. This category includes the four basic professional education courses required by all faculty members and other studies in the field of specialization. All members of the faculty should have certain basic professional education courses. These courses provide the tools to improve the teaching and the learning process of the student. The College requires all instructors to complete Instructional Techniques and Instructional Design, or their equivalents, plus the choice of two other professional educational courses form the list provided; at least one must be a technology based course*. (3) Technology in the Classroom* (4) Computer Literacy (CIS 111)* (5) Advisor and Counselor Training (7) Effective Online Teaching (formerly Designing and Online Classroom)* Instructors must complete one course per year, or as their individual faculty schedules allow until all requirements are met. See Performance Evaluation Manual, "Faculty Professional Development Plan." General Exemptions from Professional Development Courses: Faculty members who have completed an education degree at the undergraduate or graduate level or who have a Teaching Certificate, may be exempted from all professional development requirements, except Computer Literacy. Official transcripts showing completion of an education degree or copies of a Teaching Certificate must be on file in the Human Resources Office. Faculty may be able to substitute an equivalent college credit course for a Professional Development course by requesting a waiver through supervisory channels. Documentation from the college credit course (syllabus/outline, e.g.) verifying that this course covered the same topics as the Professional Development course must be attached to the waiver form. A person who has taught at a Military Academy, Command and General Staff
College, War College, Branch school, ROTC, or other formal military school, with
appropriate documentation to verify that their training to teach in these
military schools included the requirements of the Professional Development
course(s), may request a waiver through supervisory channels. Exemptions for Technology in the Classroom: The Designing an Online Classroom (DOC) course is required of instructors who intend to teach classes on the Internet. The DOC course is not considered a substitute for Technology in the Classroom. However, instructors who have completed the DOC course and are teaching online classes may be exempt from part of this requirement (Technology in the Classroom Part B) by submitting a waiver request through supervisory channels. Individuals receiving this partial exemption must complete Technology in the Classroom Part A in the same semester in which Part B was waived. Exemptions for Computer Literacy: Effective Fall 2002, CIS 111 has been established as the recommended course to meet the computer literacy requirement. CIS 110, a higher-level course, is an approved substitution for this requirement. Faculty who completed CAS 101 AND CAS 103 or CAS 109 prior to April 1996 may receive credit for this requirement. Faculty teaching computer courses are exempt from this requirement. Faculty who have completed the DOC course, teach on-line courses, and who feel they should be exempt from this requirement may request a waiver through supervisory channels. If this waiver is denied, the individual may opt to sign up for a CIS 111 proficiency exam, which can be scheduled through the individual’s Dean. Faculty Professional Development Waiver Form
